I have always been fascinated with the cross. For one thing, one of my favorite people on planet earth was my mother's foster mother, whose surname was Cross. For another, I grew up in an apartment with a number of crucifixes, and I was perplexed as a young girl as to why Jesus was hanging from the cross. It would take a number of religion classes before I fully understood the sacrifice Christ made for me and for all of us.
Given my history, I was eager to dive into the new book, The Cross: A Universal Symbol, by Helen Hoffner, Ed. D. The book, the cover of which is emblazoned with a number of distinct crosses, does not disappoint. Hoffner has created a mini-encyclopedia of the cross, covering everything from the cross at Ground Zero to the Processional Cross found at your local Catholic Church.
Hoffner has even included tasty tidbits such as the cross found on Oreo cookies and the Distinguished Flying Cross presented to aviator Amelia Earhart. The book is beautifully illustrated with a full range of crosses of various shapes, sizes, and colors.
If you have ever sat in awe, staring at a cross, this book is for you. It will serve to deepen your appreciation of a worldwide symbol of hope and perseverance and may just strengthen your faith as well!
The variation in the crosses on the cover alone is interesting! Thanks for linking to An Open Book!
