I found Be Not Troubled by Fr. Jeffrey Kirby to be a down-to-earth, easy-to-read retreat guide.
Designed to be read over the course of six days, it is based on the phenomenal work Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre De Caussade.
The beauty of this book is its reliance on the present moment to put you in touch with the Almighty. For those of us who struggle with worry and anxiety, this is especially important, since we tend to live regretting the past or focusing on a frightening future.
Who could not find solace within a chapter entitled, "On Doing Our Part and Leaving the Rest to God"? This chapter, along with the others, offers an opening invitation to the retreatant to "set aside your worries of the day," take a few deep breaths, and ask God to speak to you through the wisdom of the chapter's pages.
The book's reflections are poignant and spiritually spot-on. Each chapter also includes "Spiritual Steps" to build on the material discovered in that section.
If you would love to go away for retreat, but simply don't have the time or resources, Be Not Troubled is a handy alternative.
